The "Kangas" Genealogy Project

What is The Kangas Genealogy Project?

I (Stephen Kangas) am conducting an on-going genealogical research project on the Kangas families of the world.  Doing it purely for fun, I have been at it for over 15 years and have accumulated over 1500 individuals into The Kangas Genealogy Project database.   Typically, the database contains so-called "vital" statistics, such as first/last names, birth dates, birth places, death dates, death places, and (most importantly) relationship links between individuals.  Often, additional information in included, such as occupations, causes of death, education levels, places of emigration/immigration, and contact information, is included.

What are some of the benefits?

In many cases, the Kangas Genealogy Project has "painted a picture" of distinct Kangas family groups originating in Finland and immigrating to certain areas of the USA, Canada, Sweden, and Australia.  It is interesting to see the movement and evolution of Kangas families over time.

There have been cases where Kangas relatives "discovered" each other via the Kangas Genealogy Project; in other words, they didn't know about family relationships with others in The Kangas Genealogy Project database previously, but were linked to those relatives after submitting genealogy information on their own families.

Some people visiting this web site find the idea of tracing their "roots" or locating surprise relatives in other areas of the world interesting and exciting, which can prompt them to embark on gathering information and learning more about their own ancestral families...an enrichening experience.

Personally, I have traced my lineage back to Erik Kangaskokko, born 1748 in Piippola, Finland.  As I look back in time at past ancestors, it makes me curious what their lives were like...which has led me to learn more about the history and cultures of the areas they lived in.  Perhaps you also will  become interested in learning more about the culture, history, and times of other areas of the world where you have Kangas relations, as a result of exploring your ancestors and extended family.
